Eruption in Grimsvotn
A volcanic eruption began in the Grimsvotn underneath the Vatnajökull glacier in South-East Iceland in the afternoon of Saturday, 21 May. Due to airborn ash concentration resulting from the eruption plume, aviation safety measures are in effect and domestic and international air traffic has been closed for Sunday 22 May.
Further information on the eruption can be found on the websites of the Icelandic Department of Civil Protection and Emergency Management and the Icelandic Met Office. For information on airtraffic, see the websites of the respective airlines and Isavia.
Respective travel agents are providing information to foreign visitors in Iceland. Visit Iceland and Visit Reykjavik are offering all guests in Reykjavik Tourist Cards free of charge, which gives admission to museums and galleries, thermal Pools and buses.
Grimsvotn in Vatnajokull glacier is more than 200 km away from Reykjavik.
