Icelandic Minister of Finance opens for trading on the London Stock Exchange

Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs, opened for the day's trading on the London Stock Exchange. The Market opening follows the Treasury’s successful issuance of EUR 750 million green bonds in March. The bonds were issued of the Treasury's sustainable financing framework.

Investors showed great interest in the green bond issuance and demand amounted to EUR 7 billion, more than nine times the issued amount. The institutional investor group consisted of central banks, banks, insurance companies and other institutional investors, mainly from Northern Europe. The issuance was managed by JP Morgan, BNP Paribas, DZ bank and Nomura.

"The first green bond issued by The Treasury in March marks the beginning of Iceland's journey towards sustainable financing. The government has placed great emphasis on sustainability and has clear goals for the environment. This great interest from investors is a sign of the credibility of Iceland's fiscal and environmental policy, which underlines the international commitments we have undertaken," says Sigurður Ingi Jóhannsson, Minister of Finance and Economic Affairs. The proceeds of the bonds will be used to cover the Treasury's costs incurred over the next three years for expenditure that falls under clearly defined categories in the Sustainable Development Framework.

The minister was accompanied by Iceland's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Sturla Sigurjónsson, representatives of the Icelandic business community with operations in London and representatives from the management banks of the green issuance.
