Icelandic Press Officer to join UNICEF in Sudan
The Icelandic Crisis Response Unit has deployed a press officer, Mr. Steinar Sveinsson, for two months to take part in the UNICEF Programme in Sudan. Mr. Sveinsson will be a part of UNICEF’s media office in Khartoum, focussing in particular on the situation in the Darfur region. The Icelandic Crisis Response Unit, of the Ministry for Foreign Affairs, has previously sent experts to the UNICEF in Sudan, one of whom is a logistician in South Sudan.
The United Nations estimate that around 300.000 people have been killed in the Darfur region since 2004 and that the dire humanitarian situation there affects 4.7 million people, half of whom are children. The UNICEF Sudan programme is currently its largest anywhere in the world.
