Presentation of Letter of Credence to the International Atomic Energy Agency in Vienna (IAEA)
Minister Plenipotentiary Guðni Bragason, Permanent Representative of Iceland in Vienna, presented his Letter of Credence to the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Mr. Yukiya Amano, on 22 May 2018 at the IAEA Headquarters in Vienna.
In a meeting with Director General Amano, Mr. Bragason emphazised Iceland’s support to the IAEA and the Agency’s important work, such as reconciliation efforts in various sensitive disputes, nuclear safety and radioactive waste, peaceful utilization of nuclear power and the application of nuclear power tools in development projects, mainly in Africa. Various other issues were discussed such as general energy issues, energy security and energy consumption in the world. In this context they discussed briefly renewable energy resources and their utilization in Iceland.
The monitoring role of the IAEA 's main role is to ensure the peaceful and safe use of nuclear energy. The Agency also carries out important research and development on peaceful application of nuclear energy and nuclear technology which i.a. contributes to ensuring food security and enhances progress in the field of health. Furthermore the IAEA has a technical assistance program.
