Screening meeting on science and research concluded
Screening meeting with the European Union on Chapter 25 – Science and research – was concluded in Brussels 14 January. At the meeting, the latter one of two, experts from Iceland and the European Union compared the legislation of the Chapter. The Icelandic team was headed by Mr. Harald Aspelund, chairman of the EEA II negotiation team. No discussion took place on special solutions, exemption or adjustments, as Iceland participates in EU Framework Programs in the area of science and research on the basis the EEA-Agreement.
With the enlargement of the European Union, along with it's increased number of collaborators, the possibilities of the EFTA/EEA-states to influence the strategy in the science and research programmes have been reduced. It is expected the conditions would change if Iceland becomes a member state of the EU.
