Icelandic Language Day (dagur íslenskrar tungu) is celebrated in Iceland on November 16 each year. This date was chosen to coincide with the birthday of the Icelandic poet Jónas Hallgrímsson. The day was first celebrated in 1995 and currently the celebration spans almost a whole week each year.

This year an Icelandic Language Day celebration will be held at the Scandinavian Cultural Centre in Winnipeg on November 12th at 6:30pm. The focus of the celebration will be on how young people in Canada can be introduced to Icelandic culture and the Icelandic language through the Snorri Programs and the Youth Mobility Agreement between Canada and Iceland. There will be a presentation on the Icelandic Special Collection at the University of Manitoba. Of course there will be musical performances.
