Licence Applications
The Ministry of Education and Children is responsible for issuing teaching licences.
The Act on the education, competency and recruitment of teachers and administrators of preschools, compulsory schools and upper secondary schools, No 95/2019, entered into force on 1 January 2020.
The Ministry seeks to process applications within 12 weeks.
If applicants have teaching qualifications that were issued by a competent authority in a EU/EEA member state, they can apply for mutual recognition of those qualifications in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC.
Applicants need to submit a certificate, issued by their country‘s Ministry of Education or the competent authority that oversees the field of education, which confirms that they have such qualifications, in accordance with Directive 2005/36/EC. The certificate shall include information about which ages of children applicants are licensed to teach, and that their license has not been revoked or been subject to restrictions or other disciplinary actions.
Diplomas, Diploma Supplements, and other relevant documents in languages other than Icelandic, other Nordic languages or English must be accompanied by translations from an authorized translator.
